Pet Safety
Adrianne Becker, DVM
As the lawn bare spots begin to sprout new growth, and we enjoy the faint smell of spring in the air, our pets want to be outside longer. While the weather becomes more enjoyable, be aware that there are perils to our pets associated with the great outdoors. Exercise increases with good weather people are walking and running with their pets, on leash and off. Running can be good for you and your pet, but realize it takes a couple of months to get in shape. Our animal counterparts can get sore just as easily as we can.
Never give your pet ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Aspirin is a little safer, but can cause gastro intestinal upset, so always call us before medicating your dog. NEVER give human pain medicines to cats, it can be life threatening. Along with sore muscles and joints, our dogs pads can get worn down and cause a lot of pain. Sometimes this is severe enough that the dog needs to be on pain medication and antibiotics, sometimes just some time on soft ground will do the trick. If you like to spend time at an off leash park, please be sure you dog is voice-controlled trained. A squirrel or kitty may be across the street and when your dog gets into the zone it is difficult to get their attention.
Most dogs love to chase sticks but beware! Becoming impaled by a stick in the soft palate of the mouth is common. This is a terrible spot for an injury these accidents can become very infected and life threatening. If you like to play fetch with your dog, choose an appropriate toy for this activity.
Accidents can happen so quickly - Being hit by a car can be devastating emotionally and financially. Even if your dog seems to be fine after and accident, it can sometimes take 24-48 hours for pulmonary damage to show outward signs. Call us immediately so that we can assess your pets health! If your dog or cat gets loose and travels further than they should, an Avid Chip may save the day. An Avid Chip is a small rice sized microchip that can be scanned at almost any veterinary clinic, animal shelter or Humane Society. Once scanned, it provides the finder with information that can re-unite you with your beloved pet.
Spring and summer are welcomed times to be outside for play! Please be safe, and call us if you have any questions or concerns!
