Coffee Creek - LVH in the Community

Since 2005 Laurelhurst Veterinary Hospital has been a proud sponsor of canines being raised at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility. A small group of inmates at the facility raise puppies for Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit service dog organization providing highly-trained assistance dogs for children and adults with disabilities free of charge to the recipient. The inmates provide the care, training, and socialization for the CCI puppies from the age of 4 months to about 18 months to prepare them for advanced training in Santa Rosa, CA. Laurelhurst sponsors one puppy a year and provides all the medical care for that puppy. The staff at Laurelhurst are very pleased to be a part of this program and the impact it has on the community.

Meet the Laurelhurst sponsored dogs:

Finn

Finn was placed as a service dog with a veteran, Joshua Hooker, injured in the war. Joshua was quoted as saying, “I’m pretty capable of doing things on my own, but towards the end of the day, I really can’t move or walk. I know Finn is going to help retrieve things such as my prosthesis or whether it be a remote on the ground or keys... and just save my back throughout the day.

Gregory

Seymour

Seymour is the dog currently being sponsored by Laurelhurst. He is doing great in his initial training with the inmates and he is a pleasure to have here at the hospital as a patient. Seymour will be moving on to CCI in Santa Rosa for advanced training in February of 2011.
